SYNOPSIS Recreation of poem [meine heimat] by Ulrike Almut Sandig

REASON Upon hearing this poem and read an english translation, I felt personally concerned, that’s why I started to shoot some images of what had me transmitted, during a visit to my heymat, a small village at northwest of my country, at the past Christmas holidays. Frost each night was complicit in my work, as when I got up, I find was frozen the words he was leaving at rough weather every night. The word heimat evokes there is a place in the world to which one belongs entirely, even in cases where life is determined to set our house in another space [more cold and material, guided by values that are alien]. That place is necessary to leave and is essential return, as birds do. Another initial connection was to find all lowercase and this formula of the square brackets that —as Ulrike—, I like to use, instead of the usual signature of parentheses.

Poem translations

[meine heimat]

[my heimat]

i have forgotten the names of the large birds

each june a brood falls from the ridge of a barn that now

stands empty. later in the year they stand stiffly on the fields,

from the street the coats curdled white, from a distance

smells of cheap bouquets + steel + possessions

affected by the storm the other day: my heimat

in the heimat names break on the soil’s ridge,

in a word: what is raised there i find strange.
